How We Train New Irrigation Technicians

Building Careers & Keeping Customers Happy

TriState Water Works’ team of irrigation technicians are experts in the best practices in the industry. Because we value Continuous Improvement, we focus on training and education, holding sessions every Monday morning on different aspects of irrigation. Our emphasis on achievement helps our technicians reach the top of the field and ensures our customers are receiving the best sprinkler service and maintenance possible.

New technicians go through a rigorous training program to quickly bring them up to speed, which includes:

  1. Hands-On Workshops
  2. On-the-Job Apprenticeship

How We Train New Irrigation Technicians:
Workshops

Our founder Sean Mullarkey heads up both introductory and advanced training. He developed several teaching tools, like this sprinkler head rig.

How We Train New Irrigation Technicians

It attaches to a garden hose and includes a pressure regulator, so it’s easy to see how different water pressures affect the function of various sprinkler head types. Each sprinkler head type performs a different job in a customer’s lawn or landscape. For instance:

  • Rotors work well for large areas of lawn
  • Sprays are traditional for smaller lawn areas or landscape plantings
  • MP rotator nozzles are newer, more efficient technology that can often replace sprays

New technicians learn how to adjust sprinkler heads to achieve best coverage for individual areas, from large stretches of lawn to individual shrubs.

They’ll also gain experience with sprinkler heads from different irrigation brands, so they become familiar with operational quirks.

How We Train New Irrigation Technicians:
On-the-Job

Once initial training is underway, our new irrigation technicians are ready to ride along with an experienced technician and learn more on-the-job at customer properties. They encounter all sorts of situations, like:

  • Leaks: Repairing all leaks, from sneaky, slow drips to erupting geysers
  • Electrical problems: Getting tips for tracing down tricky electrical issues
  • Seasonal maintenance: Learning the best practices for spring start-up, winterization and backflow device testing
  • Irrigation upgrades: Assessing which exciting new technologies may benefit our customers, like smart watering

Ultimately, TriState Water Works’ technicians graduate to their own routes and their own truck, working independently for the benefit of our customers. It’s rewarding work in the great outdoors, where techs get to enjoy creative problem-solving and new properties every day. And since Teamwork is another of our core values, help on difficult repairs is just a phone call away. We all support one another and works towards mutual success.
