Add a Flow Meter to Your Hydrawise Smart Controller
Wouldn’t it be useful to know right away if your sprinkler system sprung a leak? And even more useful to have that zone shut off automatically and alert TriState Water Works to schedule repairs? Adding a flow meter to your Hydrawise-enabled smart watering irrigation system is a simple upgrade that does all this and more.
Leak Alerts with a Flow Meter: How it Works
A flow meter is a water meter that measures how much water is flowing to each of your sprinkler zones. It sends this data to the Hydrawise smart controller, which the system can use to make better decisions about your property’s watering needs.
Leaks are detected when the sprinkler system is turned off, but the flow meter senses water flow. Then, the system sends alerts to those who have notifications enabled (which could be you, us or both). The smart watering system can also be configured to turn off that zone automatically. Learning about and fixing a leak quickly is important for several reasons:
- Saves water usage
- Saves money on your water bill
- Prevents erosion in your yard
- Prevents overwatering around the leak, which can kill your lawn or landscaping
Flow Meters Also Catch Broken Sprinkler Heads
If you have a broken sprinkler nozzle in your system, the head is going to “geyser” water, instead of distributing it evenly. This uses more water than normal, so the flow meter detects this problem, as well. Sprinkler heads can break for a number of reasons, like:
- Broken by a lawn mower or weed whacker
- Stepped on by a person or animal
- Gardening or pruning near the sprinkler head
- Wear and tear over time
Again, quickly fixing a broken sprinkler head will get your system functioning like it should.
More Flow Meter Benefits: Detailed Water Use Reports
Leak alerts are definitely the main benefit of upgrading to a flow meter. But this device also records and reports detailed information about your irrigation system’s water use. Here’s an example of an overall report from one of our customers.
Now, that’s a very basic data point, but the Hydrawise app allows you to drill down as much as you want. Here’s another report showing each zone’s performance.
Although you may not need this much detail, it can help TriState Water Works technicians optimize your water usage and lawn and landscape health. We’ve helped customers reduce their water bill by analyzing this data and fixing intermittent problems that are tricky to track.
